A Message to the Manual Arts HS Community

Hello Manual Arts HS Community,

My name is Desirie Safotu and I am so excited to be your NEW Assistant Principal over Secondary Counseling Services and part of this diverse community of South Los Angeles.

I am excited to begin this journey with all of you.  My personal journey also started in a diverse community in Los Angeles where I am a proud High school graduate of LAUSD. A few years later, I started my teaching career as a high school Social Studies teacher at David Starr Jordan High School, located in one of the most underserved communities in Los Angeles. There I found a true passion to serve others. A passion to teach and equip students with the tools they need to grow into a responsible, compassionate young adults who are able to make a difference in not only their lives but in the lives of others. After 10 years in the classroom, I continued my journey to support the STEM Magnet program at Manual Arts High School as a Magnet Coordinator and Academic Counselor.

As your new Assistant Principal, it is my core belief that collaboration has to be at the forefront. It is important that as a community we work together to foster a shared responsibility for all students, we establish and maintain a positive school climate, and we engage all stakeholders as partners. I want to continue the strong traditions of Manual Arts High School and work cooperatively with our active student partnerships to meet the needs of all students and continue to attain student achievement.

I also believe the in the power of building trusting relationships with staff, students and parents. I know that this is an integral part of any student success. Having an open line communication and being respectful of individual needs is important. As your new Assistant Principal, it is important to me to maintain a culture conducive to student and educator growth by promoting and implementing systems to foster positive student behavior, equity and motivating students toward attaining their goals. Therefore, I have an open door policy. I want to establish a trusting environment where I can assist with any questions or concerns so we are able to support our students better.

As a school community, we still have a lot of work ahead of us and I understand that the work will not be easy at times, but I am here to support the whole child and promote the growth of each student here at Manual Arts High School! I can’t wait to meet you all and excited to begin this journey with you!

With Gratitude,

Mrs. Safotu
